Utah Prevention Day

Governor Gary R. Herbert has declared Thursday May 2, 2019 as “Utah Prevention Day”.  The official day is a part of Resilient Utah, a state-wide program dedicated to building resiliency and hope in Utah’s children, protecting them from the dangers of substance abuse, self-harm and bullying. Utah elementary and secondary schools will be recognizing Utah Prevention Day by holding activities that celebrate the prevention efforts they have accomplished during the year.  There will be a special Opening Ceremony and event called “Utah Prevention Day with the Bees”, held on May 2nd at the Smith’s Ballpark, in conjunction with a Salt Lake Bees game.  More than 12,000 5th grade students and teachers will be in attendance.  Among the special guests involved in the Opening Ceremony will be First Lady of Utah Jeanette Herbert, Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, Cónsul Titular of México  José V. Borjón, KSL’s Deanie Wimmer, Steve and Lisa James and more than 500 student performers.  Event partners include Salt Lake Bees, Multicultural Counseling Center, KSL, Utah Family Partnership Network and Something Good Inc.

School Celebrations

Utah Prevention Day gives schools around the state an opportunity to celebrate the prevention lessons that students have learned throughout the year. Teachers can review and reinforce those life skills taught before students leave for the summer. We want to protect our students from the dangers of drugs, under-age drinking, violence, crime, bullying, and promote resiliency through positive life choices.

There will be a central celebration of Utah Prevention Day on May 2nd at the Smith’s Ballpark with the Salt Lake Bees and 12,000 students and teachers. The Governor’s Utah Prevention Day Declaration will be presented. As a part of the state-wide celebration, schools are encouraged to do an activity promoting a prevention message, either on May 2nd or sometime before the end of the school year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”20″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Possible Activities

Possible Activities could include tying a prevention message into an activity you already have scheduled during May, such as a field day, carnival or end-of-year assembly. Another option is to hold a teacher-student baseball game or write pledges to be drug free and display them. Teachers can also teach lessons from their school’s prevention curriculum. There are many options. You can be creative, have fun and still keep it simple![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

An important goal of Utah Prevention Day is to remind students of the prevention lessons they have learned this year before Summer begins!

Let’s help Utah students “Spring into Summer” with vital messages of PREVENTION!
